Faunal Changes and Events Near the Frasnian-Famennian Boundary of South China
Abstract
Study on the Frasnian- Famennian boundary beds of South China reveals that there are at least three geochemical anomaly beds near the F-F boundary which has been proposed to coincide with the gigas/triangularis boundary. One bed is between the Middle Palmatolepis triangularis Zone and Upper Palmatolepis triangularis Zone, two beds are within the Palmatolepis crepida Zone. The late extinction of the brachiopod fauna occurs near the base of the crepida Zone, the horizon where Atrypacea and Pentameracea became extinct. Data of elemental analyses and microspheres from the anomaly beds supports that the possible cause of the anomalies are extraterrestrial rather than terrestrial.
