Sandstone Dikes and an Estimate of Their Depth of Injection in the Colorado Shales (Cretaceous), Alberta

Dale Leckie, Dan Potocki

Abstract

Two cores from the lower part of the Cretaceous Colorado Group in the Caroline area of west-central Alberta contain sandstone dikes. Calculations involving compaction indicate that the dikes were injected at burial depths of approximately 150 to 300 m. Dike injection may have been triggered by seismic shocks resulting from volcanic/tectonic activity in eastern British Columbia.
