Abstract
Regional Paleogeography and Tectonics
The Formation and Development of a Late Paleozoic Sedimentary Basin on the Passive Margin of the Siberian Paleocontinent
Abstract
The South Verkhoyansk sedimentary basin is located on the southeast passive margin of the Siberian paleoconti-nent. Middle Devonian-earliest Carboniferous rifting was accompanied by local compression and extension. Detrital rocks, evaporites, carbonates and basalts are widespread. This tectonic event is typical for Northeast Russia and correlates with the “Antler orogeny” of North America. Intensive subsidence of the basin and sedimentation of carbonate flysch sequence was active in late Visean time. In the Lower Carboniferous (Serpukhovian)-Permian carbonate-free, fine grained terrigenous rocks are predominant, but massive sandstones and chaotic complexes are also present. The terrigenous succession coarsens upward and is typical of submarine fan and basin environments. Some of the Upper Permian sandstones could be of deltaic origin. Comparison with modern basins shows that similar sedimentary environments are recognized in the Mississippi delta-submarine fan system.
