Golden Spike D3A Pool

J. G. McGillivray

Abstract

Golden Spike is an isolated Upper Devonian (Leduc Formation) limestone reef complex with three major stages of development: 1) basal biostrome, lower Leduc; 2) biohermal stage, middle Leduc; and 3) reef-fringed bank, upper Leduc. In the crestal area of the buildup, total thickness of the Leduc Formation (D3) reaches 1,050 feet; of which, the upper 575 feet forms the productive D3A pool (middle, upper Leduc members). Six divisions (phases of vertical reef complex development) are recognized in the middle and upper Leduc sequence.

Reservoir development is facies controlled; the most productive rock types are massive stromatoporoid and skeletal calcarenite facies on the reef-flat margin. Facies in the fore-reef and within parts of the interior are generally poor reservoir rocks because the matrix is either mud-supported or well-cemented.
