Reservoir Heterogeneity in the Keg River ‘AA’ Pool Rainbow Field, Alberta

Paul Frydl

Abstract

The Keg River AA pool in the Rainbow Field is a dolomitized carbonate buildup of Middle Devonian age. The pool contained 11 million m3 of oil-in-place and presently is in a mature stage of a miscible hydrocarbon flood.

The AA Pool is characterized by a high degree of reservoir variability. Heterogeneities occur on several scales and affect both reservoir behavior and reservoir evaluation:

1. Zones of low permeability associated with subaerial exposures are present. They affect fluid movement in the reservoir and locally lead to internal trapping of oil.

2. Variations in porosity and permeability are often related to variation in the original sediment. Several broadly defined depositional facies can be defined in spite of pervasive dolomitization. Mapping of their distribution greatly aids the volumetric evaluation of the reservoir.

3. The vuggy nature of the reservoir adversely affects core recovery, complicates evaluation of reservoir properties from both core and logs, and hinders core-log correlation.

Development of a geological model leading to understanding the causes and distribution of these heterogeneities is essential to successful reservoir management.
