Comparison of Modern and Pleistocene Estuarine Facies in Willapa Bay, Washington

Roberto J. Anima, H. Edward Clifton, R. Lawrence Phillips

Abstract

Cores from modern deposits provide data on textural and mineralogical changes in the sedimentary record, primary physical structures, degree of bioturbation, and indications of the nature of infauna. All of these contribute to a better understanding of the dynamics of a specific depositional system or area of study.

Coring, with the use of SCUBA, was conducted in the study of Willapa Bay, a Pacific coast estuary, to investigate the variety of bedforms and subsurface structures that are left in the sedimentary record as a result of tidal and wave influence. The resulting data provide a basis for interpreting analogous features within Pleistocene terrace deposits that surround the estuary.
