Abstract
Sedimentologic, Paleontologic, and Ichnologic Criteria for the Recognition of Ancient Estuarine Deposits: An Example from the Lower Cretaceous McMurray Formation in the Athabasca Oils Sands Area of Northeastern Alberta
Abstract
The Lower Cretaceous McMurray Formation of the Athabasca oil sands area of northeastern Alberta (Fig. 1) represents a classic example of estuarine and marginal marine sedimentation in a nonbarred coastal environment during the first major transgression of the (late Aptian? to early Albian) Clearwater Sea into the Western Canadian Basin. A representative drill core from the 2-28-92-11W4 well is described with respect to the sedimentologic, paleontologic, and ichnologic evidence that lead us to conclude that these deposits represent an ancient fluvial estuarine nearshore system.
