Reservoir Characterization of Shaley Sandstones in the Belly River (Judith River) Formation. Examples from Wilson Creek and Ghostpine, Alberta

G. Wasser

Abstract

The Upper Cretaceous Belly River Formation comprises sandstones and shales formed in environments ranging from tidally dominated deltas to the alluvial plain. Although sourced from the Cordillera, lithology and reservoir quality varies greatly. Clay content, clay mineralogy, grain size and water saturation are the critical factors that determine reservoir quality. These factors are strongly influenced by the depositional facies in which the Belly River deposits were formed. As a general rule of thumb, channel deposits have a better reservoir quality than mouthbar and nearshore deposits. To successfully explore and develop the Belly River Formation, careful reservoir characterization of each prospect is essential.
