Abstract
Stratigraphy of Special Areas
Devonian of the Cordillera of Colombia
Abstract
Marine sedimentation covering the folded Caledonian complex of the northern Andes began at the close of the Early Devonian. The sediments are exclusively restricted to the area of the present Eastern Cordillera. This is attributed to the fact that they were caught in an intermontane basin which developed in this area immediately following the Caledonian orogeny.
The homogeneity of these exclusively clastic deposits is conspicuous, as is the case in many other areas of subsidence. Sedimentologic and biofacial characteristics indicate a generally shallow lagoon-like environment into which several hundred metres of sandy-clayey material were dumped.
Upper Devonian deposits are still unknown and their existence is doubtful.
