The Lower Devonian of the Eastern Iberian Chains (NE Spain) and the distribution of its Spiriferacea, Acastavinae and Asteropyginae

P. Carls, J. Gandl

Abstract

From the region 60 km S. of Zaragoza, a stratigraphical profile of the Lower Devonian is described which overlies the highest Silurian without lacuna. Thickness of the whole sequence is about 1,500 m, half of which, approximately, corresponds to Upper Emsian. Rhenish facies predominates but is interrupted several times and with certain rhythm by organodetritic limestones and shaly sediments showing some Hercynian characteristics. The strata are generally very rich in fossils, especially brachiopods, and trilobites. The distribution of the Spiriferacea, Acastavinae and Asteropyginae together with other brachiopods and trilobites permits a biostratigraphical division of the Lower Devonian of this region.
