Practical Considerations for NAPL Recovery

Terrance P. Brennan

Abstract

Oil appears to coexist with groundwater in the saturated zone, which affects the observance of nonaqueous phase liquid (NAPL) in monitoring wells and the mobility of NAPL. This affects how much NAPL can be recovered at a site; thus, any residual NAPL will be a continuing source for dissolved-phase contamination. The observed thickness of NAPL in a well is not directly related to the NAPL saturation in the aquifer. The observance of NAPL depends on the relative groundwater level and on subtle changes in stratigraphy, but the observance of NAPL does not mean that the NAPL can be recovered.
