Innovative Remediation Technologies Applicable to Soil and Groundwater Impacted by Polycyclic Aromatic Hydrocarbons

Abstract

Various innovative technologies are applicable to the remediation of soils and/or groundwater contaminated with polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAHs). PAHs are common constituents of crude oil, numerous petroleum products and byproducts, and coal. Although more common remedial approaches such as excavation, capping, and containment by slurry walls or by hydraulic pumping barriers have been used at some environmental sites, these more familiar methods may not be economical, effective, practical, or acceptable to facility owners and/or environmental regulators.

Oil production facilities, pipelines, refineries, bulk storage terminals, manufactured gas plants, wood treatment plants, and other industrial and commercial properties are most likely to benefit from innovative remedial technologies such as hot waterflooding, surfactant flushing, steam stripping, soil augering, bioremediation, and bioventing with biosparging.
