Commitment by the Minerals Management Service to the Nation’s Energy Future and a Quality Environment

Cynthia Quarterman

Abstract

Since its creation in 1982, the Minerals Management Service (MMS) has developed policies and procedures to help ensure that all exploration and development activities carried out on the Outer Continental Shelf (OCS) are done in a safe and environmentally sound manner. The MMS is committed to the nation’s energy future and a quality environment both through implementation of new initiatives and continuation of ongoing programs. Issues related to the nation’s energy future include the assessment of OCS resources, the Comprehensive Five-Year Leasing Program, leasing moratoria, and interaction with stakeholders. Issues related to a quality environment include quality science, environmental studies programs, and safe and clean operations.
