ABSTRACT: The Fordoche Oil and Gas Field Pointe Coupee Parish, Louisiana

L. P. Kilbourne

ABSTRACT

The Fordoche Field, located in the Gulf Coast area approximately 2 miles to the southwest of the town of Fordoche and 25 miles west of Baton Rouge, was discovered December 25, 1948, by The Texas Company. The presence of a structure in this area was first indicated as early as 1936 as a result of reflection seismic work. Later seismic surveys proved the presence of such structure which more or less conforms to the present outline of the field.

The structure is a simple elongated-type uplift, trending east-west, bounded on the north by an east-west fault, downthrown-to-the south, with a displacement of 230-300'. The dips on the various producing and prospective sands are very gentle to the south, with steeper north dips into the fault. The amount of the uplift is unknown but it is believed to be in excess of 200'.

The producing section thus far is limited to the Frio sands in the Oligocene, with no accumulation in this Frio section on the high side of the fault. At the present time there are 8 prospective and producing gas sands and 6 producing oil sands, these sands occurring from 8000' to 9250'. No Eocene production has been encountered. However, oil shows have been indicated in the Cockfield and Sparta sands. All sands present in the Frio are extremely lenticular and some of those carrying accumulation of oil or gas show varying water levels and gas-oil contacts due to this lenticular condition.

The field is operated by The Texas Company, with E. W. K. Andrau and Nicklos Drilling Company having 1/4 interest each, and The Texas Company 1/2 interest in 1,434 productive acres and The Texas Company having 100% interest in 286 productive acres.

Only one gas sand is currently being produced, and that from two wells located in 320-acre units. The oil sands have been developed on 40-acre drilling units and due to small ownerships in some cases it has been necessary that the separate interests be unitized.

At the end of August, 1951 the field was producing at the rate of 2,750 barrels of oil per day.
