Information on the Origin of Oil as Obtained from the Study of Some Asphaltic Limestones

D. D. Utterback (1)

ABSTRACT

Two widely separated asphaltic limestone outcrops are described. Evidence from thin sections and polished surfaces points to an in situ origin for the asphalt. Although the in situ theory of origin for petroleum deposits has been advanced several times in the past, the majority of geologists accept the theory of unlimited migration from shale source beds. Geologists are urged to accept the view of limited migration for only it provides a sound theoretical foundation that allows room for the eventual development of conceptions that could prove of practical value in the intensive search for commercial accumulations.
