ABSTRACT

Semantics in the science of meanings. General Semantics is concerned with how people perceive the world around them and how they cope with their problems. Communication between people is based largely on words, and the effectiveness of the communication depends upon the extent to which all involved understand the meaning of the words in the same way. Much of the prejudice and superstition which exists in the business of oil exploration can be eliminated by a careful analysis of the true meaning of the words used in the light of all present day knowledge. Oil finders and management must not be prejudiced against prospects that are described by trend, formation, or geographical names which arouse prejudice because of some previous bad experience. Each prospect must be studied in specific detail as to porosity, permeability, structure, quality of control, etc., and not condemned just because it happens to lie in the "Wilcox Trend" or in "Austin County." On the other hand, prospects must not be approved simply because of the existence of a "seismic closure" without examining the geological aspects of the prospect and the quality of the seismic control.
