Application of the ISF/Sonic Combination Tool to Gulf Coast Formations

N. A. Schuster (1), J. D. Baden (2), E. R. Robbins (2)

ABSTRACT

The recently developed ISF (FOOTNOTE 3) Sonic combination tool provides simultaneous recording of a deep Induction Log, a shallow Spherically Focused Log (SFL (FOTNOTE 3), a BHC (FOOTNOTE 3) Sonic, and an SP or compensated SP. A Gamma-Ray unit may be added if desired.

The SFL is a new shallow-investigation resistivity log for recording with the deep Induction Log. It has a shallower investigation than either the Laterolog (FOOTNOTE 3) 8, used on the Dual Induction tool, or the short normal.

The BHC Sonic on this new tool uses more powerful transducers, to reduce the need for centralizing. The compensated SP circuitry incorporates filters to minimize extraneous potentials and to re-create the "pure" SP.

The ISF/Sonic combination tool eliminates the need for an extra run to record the Sonic Log. Simultaneous recording of Sonic and resistivity curves permits an RW2 curve, for quick location of hydrocarbon saturation, to be computed and recorded on the log at the same time.
