Abstract
Tectonic and Paleotopographic Control of Basal Chesterian Sedimentation in the Black Warrior Basin of Alabama
Jack C. Pashin, Andrew K. Rindsberg
ABSTRACT
At the start of Chesterian (Late Mississippian) time, the Ouachita orogeny began along the southwest edge of the Alabama promontory, ending the upwelling circulation system of the Fort Payne-Tuscumbia carbonate ramp. These events established the Black Warrior foreland basin, where sedimentation was controlled by simultaneous basin flexure and eustasy. The Lewis cycle is a thin, widespread veneer of carbonate and siliciclastic rocks which forms the base of the Chesterian Series in Alabama. Although thin, this cycle is heterogeneous, representing a spectrum of marginal- and open-marine environments. Inception of the Ouachita orogeny in the Alabama promontory affected marine circulation and relative sea level, but facies distribution was dominated by pre-orogenic ramp topography.
