Abstract
Vermilion River Flood Gates: To Mitigate Lafayette, Louisiana Flooding
Gary L. Kinsland
ABSTRACT
Lafayette, Louisiana experiences increasingly frequent river flooding on the Vermilion River and upland flooding on the Prairie Terrace as a result of increased urbanization. The Lafayette City/Parish government and the United States Army Corps of Engineers have presented plans to alleviate this flooding which have evoked complaints based on environmental, economic, aesthetic and efficacy arguments. An alternative plan involving gates on the Vermilion River is presented which in conjunction with enforced detention of runoff for new construction promises to mitigate the flooding problems with fewer negative impacts.
