Underground Nuclear Parks in Shallow Gulf Coast Salt Domes

Carl W. Myers

Abstract

Shallow piercement salt domes in the Gulf Coast sedimentary basin are a unique underground space resource. The purpose of this presentation is to introduce the idea of underground nuclear parks (UNPs) as a new application for that resource. The idea is, beginning approximately in the year 2025 to 2030 time frame, to begin to site one or more UNPs in the shallow portions of the salt domes, and use those UNPs to supply base load quantities of electricity, and possibly hydrogen, to the Gulf Coast region and other parts of the U.S., analogous to the manner in which oil and natural gas are currently produced in the Gulf Coast and supplied to the region and nation.
