Geologic Hazards in the North Fork of the Gunnison River Area, Delta and Gunnison Counties, Colorado

W. Rahe Junge

Abstract

The valley along the North Fork of the Gunnison River probably will experience increased future growth from coal mining, recreation activities, and development of retirement properties. Geologic hazards present in the area must be carefully considered in the planning of this growth. Geologic units in the study area have distinct characteristics that in large part control these geologic hazards. The Mancos Shale may be subject to slope instability, expansive soils, hydrocompaction, and severe erosion; the Mesaverde Formation is subject to mass wasting in the form of rockfalls, debris avalanches, and landslides; and the Wasatch Formation is dominated by active landslides and slope-failure complexes. Construction activities or major land-use changes should consider these and other geologic hazards to minimize damage or avoid destruction of manmade works.
