Abstract
Mid-Mesozoic Paleontology of the Rabbit Valley Area, Western Colorado
Abstract
The Rabbit Valley area lies along the northern flank of the Uncompahgre Plateau north of the Colorado River and near the Utah border. Since at least 1982, dinosaurs have been actively quarried in this region by the Museum of Western Colorado. To date, specimens that have been recovered include Apatosaurus, Camarasaurus, Diplodocus, a supersaurid, a diplodocid, Allosaurus, the world’s oldest Iguanodon, Stegosaurus, Goniopholis, and two chelonians (turtles). One 280-acre tract of land has been set aside on Bureau of Land Management (BLM) land as the Rabbit Valley Research Natural Area and surrounds the Trail Through Time, an outdoor interpretive exhibit jointly managed by the BLM and the Museum of Western Colorado. Research continues in this area as more specimens are quarried and a geological map is prepared.
