Abstract
The Moab Megatracksite: A Preliminary Description and Discussion of Millions of Middle Jurassic Tracks in Eastern Utah
Abstract
Dinosaur tracks occur over an area of at least 110 sq mi (300 sq km) associated with the Entrada-Summerville boundary sequence (J-3) in the area of Moab. At least a part of this area is within the boundaries of Arches National Park.
Such extensive tracksites have recently been referred to as “megatracksites”. The Moab megasite is the only Jurassic example documented to date. All known tracks are attributable to carnivorous dinosaurs (theropods) – possibly an Allosaurus–like trackmaker. High track density is attributable to prolonged trampling by dinosaurs in a coastal plain environment.
