Stratigraphic Nomenclature—Southern End Malay Basin

J. H. Armitage, C. Viotti

Abstract

Exploratory wells drilled in the southern end of the Malay Basin by Agip (Indonesia) Ltd. and partners (Phillips Petroleum Co. Indonesia and Tenneco Oil Co. Indonesia) and by Exxon Production Malaysia Inc., have encountered clastic sediments which range in age from Recent to Oligocene. Six main stratigraphic sequences have been recognized in the wells. These have been subdivided into groups and formations based on their lithologic and electric log characteristics. In addition three other formations have been defined.

Type sections for these formations have been established in Agip's AQ–4X exploration well and in Exxon's Pulai No. 1 exploration well. A lithologic and faunal description and a facies interpretation is provided for each formation.
