Completion Design Guidelines for Severe Gas Wells

D. Steel, R. Rosli

Abstract

This paper discusses Completion Design Guidelines which have been adopted by Mobil Oil Indonesia as a result of experience which has been gained through the completion, operation, and workover of wells in the Arun field, N. Sumatra.

A comprehensive completion design must consider operating conditions throughout the life of a field and give due regard to non-routine activities such as well stimulation or well workover. Mobil Oil has regularly reviewed and revised as necessary Arun Field Well Completion Design with this in mind. The revisions made have been aimed at solving problems encountered during the operation and workover of Arun field wells.

At present there are 29 production wells and 9 reinjection wells in operation in the Arun Field. Typically wells have produced at flowrates of 150 MMSCF/D and wellhead temperatures and pressures of 325 degree F and 4500 psig respectively. These extreme operating conditions have necessitated innovation thinking in terms of completion design and changes in equipment.

For discussion completion equipment is divided into five categories: X-Mas Tree and wellhead: production tubing; downhole isolation assembly; other downhole equipment; packer fluid. In each of these categories changes have been made to the original completion. In some cases the changes made are unique and may offer the industry new approaches to problems which are becoming more common as wells are produced under more severe operating conditions.
