Abstract
Preliminary Account on the Petroleum Potential of Timor Island
Abstract
In evaluating the hydrocarbon potential of Timor Island, a thorough understanding of the tectonic configuration is essential for determining potential exploration plays and to acquire an insight into the geological setting of the hydrocarbon occurrences on the island. A number of specific geological concepts have so far been developed which include the occurrence of olisthostromes and shale diapirism, related to a tectonic setting resulting from collision between the Australian - Indian Ocean, Eurasian and Pacific Ocean plates.
To acquire a better insight into the petroleum potential of the area, PERTAMINA conducted geological and gravity surveys over the western part of the island, and a remote sensing interpretation over the whole island. The results of these studies along with the previous geological data indicate the occurrence of pull-apart type basins in the area, which may increase the attractiveness of the island and its surroundings for hydrocarbon exploration.
