The Management of Reservoir Simulation in Caltex

William E. Gerbacia, Norman D. McMullen

Abstract

Caltex Pacific Indonesia is responsible for the management of over 500 reservoirs in 117 fields in Central Sumatra. This large resource requires sophisticated reservoir management techniques. Additionally, waterflood projects are being implemented in several reservoirs, and other reservoirs are being evaluated for waterflood projects. Black oil simulation plays a large role in the planning and evaluation of these projects.

The development of reservoir simulation capabilities in Sumatra has occured over a number of years. This development has culminated in the acquisition last year of a Convex C220 super computer, associated PC workstations, and an integrated simulation package. In addition, reservoir simulation standards have recently been introduced to improve the quality of simulation studies conducted at CPI.

This paper describes the hardware, software and management configuration used by CPI. The advantages and deficiencis of this approach are highlighted.
