LOWER TYLER OF CENTRAL MONTANA: MARINE OR NON-MARINE?
ABSTRACT
The depositional environment of the lower Tyler (upper Mississippian -lower Pennsylvanian?) has been Interpreted as both marine and non-marine with an overwhelming majority of workers favoring the non-marine interpretation. Skewness, kurtosis and sorting values computed from grain size studies (mechanical analyses, thin section and binocular examinations), as well as detailed mineralogical studies of lower Tyler sandstones, suggest a marine depositional environment. A marine interpretation fits logically into the sequence of events during Mississippian depositional history leading up to deposition of the lower Tyler. Consistently successful exploration for hydrocarbons in lower Tyler reservoirs necessitates a correct understanding of their environmental history.
