STRATIGRAPHY OF THE CHARLES UNIT IN THE MIDALE FIELD, SASKATCHEWAN1

ERIC R. PARKER, Stratigrapher, Shell Oil Company, Regina, Saskatchewan

ABSTRACT

Midale field is a stratigraphic trap effected by updip truncation of porous Charles beds by the post-Paleozoic unconformity. High connate water and a salty sulfurous crude characterize the reservoir, which has reserves of close to 25 million barrels of proven recoverable oil. The cyclic nature of sedimentation encountered in the Charles enables zonation of the pay unit and descriptions of the main lithotopes are made. Lateral distribution suggests bar type buildups of the coarse carbonate fraction. Low relief structure exists on top of the pay unit but is of minor importance.
