EXPLORATION IN THE MISSISSIPPIAN MISSION CANYON OF THE CATWALK FIELD
ABSTRACT
At Catwalk Field 36° gravity oil was discovered in 1979 by Hardy Salt Company, No. 4 Hardy, in porous Mississippian limestones of the Mission Canyon Formation. Development of this field has revealed several points of interest with regard to trapping mechanism, structure, porosity and fluid distribution, and formation evaluation based on electric logs.
The Catwalk Field is located in northwest North Dakota, 1 mile east of the city of Williston, in the west central part of the Williston Basin.
Seismic data suggests that a number of Mission Canyon subsurface highs lie within generally easterly dipping sediments. Available well control indicates that the trapping mechanism is provided by a combination of good structural position on localized highs and favorable location within existing porosity trends. Porosity zones correlate field wide.
Oil producing porosity zones in the upper Mission Canyon Formation tend to calculate very high water saturations from electric logs. These pessimistic values are predominantly due to a fractured reservoir. The Laterolog deep and shallow resistivity tools read lower than normal values due to invasion of drilling fluids along fractures. Erratic tracking of the Micro-Spherically focussed log is also common in the upper Mission Basin. Canyon and is diagnostic of fractured formations. Estimated reserves for the Catwalk Field range from 10 MSTB to 400 MSTB for the poorest producing well and the best producing well respectively. Gas oil ratio averages at 500 to 1, and well production is expected to decline 10 to 12% per year.
A regional producing trend extending from the Epping Field to the northeast, through the Williston and Catwalk Fields, and then southwest to Indian Hills offers many opportunities for further exploration in the Mission Canyon Formation.
