Stratigraphic and Structural Investigation of the Eola Klippe, Garvin County, Oklahoma

Diane E. Brownlee,

ABSTRACT

The Eola Klippe lies between the Pontotoc and Springer Formations in portions of the Eola Field in southwest Garvin County, Oklahoma. The klippe, which is 6 miles long and 3/4 mile wide, parallels the trend of the Robberson Horst just north of the Washita Valley Fault. A two square mile portion of the klippe was studied in detail.

The klippe consists predominantly of Simpson Group rocks, but beds as young as the Silurian Chimneyhill Formation are present. The basal McLish and Oil Creek Formation sands are very limited and often missing within the klippe.

The major structural trend within the klippe is northwest-southeast with most of the faults and many of the folds trending this direction. The units within the klippe dip steeply but are traceable throughout the klippe. The klippe is remarkably intact and appears to have been transported as a single unit.

The lack of basal Simpson sands in the klippe suggests the klippe's original location was south of the Washita Valley Fault. Although the klippe was likely transported by free glide from the southwest, the structural trends within the klippe possibly were generated by left wrench on the Washita Valley Fault prior to emplacement.

The Robberson Horst, which lacks the post-Arbuckle sequence and towered 10,000 feet above Eola during the Pennsylvanian, is most likely the original location of the klippe. Klippe transport occurred after most but not all of the wrenching along the Washita Valley Fault in the late Virgilian, just prior to Pontotoc deposition.

Seven wells produce hydrocarbons from the klippe within the study area. Another nine show traces of oil or gas and numerous traps remain untested within the klippe. Additional production from the Eola Klippe seems likely.
