The Glenn Pool Oil Field, The discovery that made Oklahoma

Norman J. Hyne

Abstract

Two men, on their own, using their own money and working on the floor of the drilling rig, brought in the Glenn Pool Oil Field in 1905, just 14 miles southwest of a small, unremarkable stop on the Frisco Railroad called Tulsa. It was the first great oil discovery in Oklahoma Territory and the Oklahoma oil boom had started. From throughout the nation, people looking for work, new technologies, and venture capital converged on Glenn Pool. In rapid succession even greater oil fields were discovered. The new oil millionaires chose Tulsa as their home and it became the "Oil Capital of the World" from 1907 to 1930. The majors are gone and there is nothing more than stripper wells left in the Glenn Pool, but that discovery molded the economy and people of Oklahoma.
