Subsidence Hazards – A History

Richard W. Strehle

Abstract

Areas of land subsidence are present throughout the world. Production of fluids from aquifers and petroleum reservoirs has caused extensive damage due to ground sinking and horizontal movement. The study of subsidence has resulted in understanding, but not complete control over the processes of compaction and subsidence. Restoration or maintenance of subsurface pressures has usually resulted in the elimination of the subsidence hazard.
