Etching Technique for Use on Thin Sections of Limestones

Alan Lees

ABSTRACT

A method of making replicas of thin sections of limestones etched with acetic acid is described. This has been found to have the following important advantages over existing staining and etching techniques:

  1. Calcite textures are preserved in detail.
  2. Insoluble minerals are left standing in their original positions so that:
    1. their distribution is readily seen, and
    2. they may be removed for precise identification if necessary.
