Observations on Rhomboid Beach Marks: NOTES

Ervin G. Otvos, Jr.

ABSTRACT

Some new thoughts are offered to explain the development of rhomboid-deltoid-shaped surface marks, occurring on marine beaches, usually called "rhomboid ripple marks." Observations on their development and 3260 measurements of their acute angles were employed. The marks--distinguished from true rhomboid beach ripples--are thought to be caused by backwash-scouring and are held to be rill marks. Another beach-surface feature, in planar view resembling the appearance of erosional ripple marks, caused by erosion and nondeposition in the intertidal zone, is also described.
