Abstract
Chemical and Mineralogical Studies of Siliceous Earth from Barbados: NOTES
S. K. El Wakeel
ABSTRACT
A siliceous earth sample from Barbados was investigated to clarify its alleged deep-sea origin. Chemical composition showed its similarity to recent deep-sea siliceous sediments in general and pelagic sediments from the Atlantic in particular. On a carbonate-free basis, the Barbados siliceous earth had a higher al than fm Niggli values, characteristic of deep-sea sediments of the Atlantic. The sample consists principally of illite clay minerals, with no kaolinite and little montmorillonite.
