Statistical Analysis of Orientation Data

Thomas A. Jones

ABSTRACT

The analysis of directional or oriented data requires methods different from those used in studying conventional linear distributions, inasmuch as choice of origin is significant. In the circular (Mises) distribution appropriate estimators are the vector mean (^tgr) and vector strength (R/n), more fully defined in the text. However, sampled data commonly is such that the circular normal distribution may not be strictly applicable. This paper is concerned with situations in which the oriented data may not be treated in the usual way, particularly when the data are bimodal, concentrated over a small range, or determinable only modulo ^pgr.
