Quick Preparation of Slides of Well-Oriented Clay Minerals for X-ray Diffraction Analyses: NOTES

Nenad Spoljaric

ABSTRACT

Slides of well-oriented clay minerals of unconsolidated sediments were made using a centrifuge. A glass slide was placed in the bottom of a flat-bottom centrifuge tube, clay-size suspension added and then centrifuged for 5 to 10 minutes at 2100 RPM. The remainder of the suspension was then decanted and the clay-coated slide removed from the container and placed under vacuum for speedy drying.

Slides prepared in this way were representative of the clay mineral assemblage of the samples; in addition, the clay particles were well-oriented. Time required for the preparation of two (or multiple of two) slides is less than one hour.
