Pore Fluids of Recent Marine Sediments: II., Anoxic Sediments of 35° to 45°N Gibraltar to Mid-Atlantic Ridge

James L. Bischoff, Teh-Lung Ku

ABSTRACT

Studies of pore water composition of samples from Straits of Gibraltar to the Mid-Atlantic Ridge have been made. The near shore sediments were strongly reducing while the deep sea were mildly reducing. In contrast to oxidizing environments of previous studies, the deep sea samples displayed Mn++ gradients which indicate recycling of this element in large areas of the sea floor. In accord with data from oxidizing environments, constancy of Cl-, SO4=, and Ca++ appears to be general, as does Mg++ depletions, K+ enrichment and enrichments in SiO2, B, and Li. Pore water chemistry of near shore strong y reducing sediments in which organic matter is abundant contrasts markedly with both deep sea reducing nd oxidizing sediments. SO4= removal, mirrored by Mg++ and Ca++ removal with depth, is characteristic.
