Abstract
Shale Petrology by Electron Microprobe: Pyrite-Chlorite Relations
Raymond Siever, Miriam Kastner (2)
ABSTRACT
Polished thin sections of several fine-grained shales were studied with an electron probe X-ray analyzer in order to map mineralogy and textures not resolvable by microscopy or X-ray diffraction. An example of the power of this analysis is the discovery of a close textural association between a Mg-Fe clay mineral and pyrite in two representative shales, the Levis (Ordovician, Quebec) and Newark Series (Triassic, New Jersey). The geochemistry of this diagenetic pair is related to Fe-Mg exchange in clay associated with sulfate reduction. Chemical, X-ray diffraction, and electron microprobe analyses are compared.
