A Sediment Squeezer for Removal of Pore Waters Without Air Contact

Emil K. Kalil, Martin Goldhaber

ABSTRACT

A low-pressure mechanical squeezer is presented for removing interstitial water from ocean sediments with only minimal or no air contact. The plastic liner in which the sediment was collected serves as the squeezing chamber, reducing oxidation of sulfides and gas exchange of CO2. Pore water is collected from both ends of a 10-cm section of core, increasing squeezing efficiency. The system is easily thermoregulated to operate at bottom temperatures. As this squeezer is inexpensive and easy to build, several units may be operated at once.
