Sublittoral Sheet Sandstones

ABSTRACT

Thin, fine grained sheet sandstones are common in ancient sandy shelf facies. Typically 5-70 cm thick, individual beds exhibit a suite of sedimentary structures: undulose to flat sole, plane or low angle lamination, and wave-rippled tops. The upper part of beds is often bioturbated and/or penecontemporaneously eroded. Two associations are distinguished: a shoreline association and an open shelf association. The first comprises amalgamated beds, the second, amalgamated beds or, more typically, sandstones interbedded with mudstones. Storms, tsunamis, floods, tides, rips and turbidity currents are possible causes. The only recent analogues seem to be the comparatively thin storm generated units described from the North Sea and Texas coast.
