Magnesian Calcite Nucleation in Ancient Dolomitized Limestones of Western Sicily

Marco Leone, Rosario Alaimo

ABSTRACT

In limestones, dolomitic limestones and dolomites from a deep drilling on Mount Bonifato, near Alcamo, the finer fractions of the dolomites contain tiny quantities of Mg calcite. The highest percentage of MgCO3 in CaCO3 is 8-9 mole %. The quantity of MgCO3 in the Mg calcite, however, seems to be related to the composition of the dolomite it is associated with. We think that the Mg calcite is the result of a redistribution of Mg2+ in post depositional processes.
