A Deeper Water Mud Mound Facies in the Alps

ABSTRACT

In the Hochlerch-Silleck syncline which forms the frontal part of the Lechtal nappe, Bavarian Alps, the lowest unit is composed of massive red limestone of Lower and Middle Jurassic age. This unit termed "massive red limestone" is a mudstone-wackestone facies which exhibits slump structures, stromatactis and an absence of algae and corals. Because of these features, in conjunction with the three dimensional shape of the deposits and evidence for organic activity it is concluded that the massive red limestone is a deeper water mud mound deposit (possibly greater than 100 meters in depth).
