Abstract
Experimental Porcelanite Recrystallization Kinetics: A Nucleation and Growth Model
C. L. Stein, R. J. Kirkpatrick
ABSTRACT
Selected run products from a series of kinetic experiments performed by Ernst and Calvert (1969) on the recrystallization of cristobalitic Monterey porcelanite were examined by scanning and transmission electron microscopy. Crystal size and morphology of newly-generated quartz prisms indicate that the zero-order solid-state transformation postulated by Ernst and Calvert is unlikely. As an alternative explanation of the kinetics of this reaction, we tentatively propose a model involving nucleation and growth of quartz by a dissolution-reprecipitation mechanism.
