Abstract
Settling Velocities of Quartz and Tourmaline in Eolian Sandstone Strata
James R. Steidtmann, Harry C. Haywood
ABSTRACT
Cumulative settling velocity-in-water curves for quartz and tourmaline were determined for 41 samples of eolian grainfall and subcritically climbing ripple stratification in the Casper sandstone. Quartz and tourmaline curves for grains from grainfall laminae show relations which are theoretically predictable for grains of different densities settling together in air. Curves for grains from ripple stratification show velocity relations indicative of traction transport. This information corroborates the grainfall and ripple migration origin of these eolian strata and provides a semi-quantitative method for their identification.
