Abstract
A Re-examination of Reported Lacustrine Vaterite Formation in Holkham Lake, Norfolk, U.K.
David Lucas, Julian E. Andrews
ABSTRACT
Holkham Lake in North Norfolk has become world renowned as the only known site where vaterite, a very rare polymorph of calcium carbonate, forms in natural waters. Detailed re-examination of the carbonate chemistry and mineralogy of the lake during 1993-1994 failed to identify vaterite formation. It is unclear why vaterite is no longer present, and it is possible that the original identification was wrong. Alternatively, vaterite formation is sporadic, triggered by an as yet unknown mechanism.
