Stratigraphy and Paleoecology of a Section in the Lower Glen Rose Formation, Comal County, Texas

Vee Ann Atnipp

Abstract

Exposures of the upper part of the lower Glen Rose Formation in Comal County are principally lime wackestones with differing fossil assemblages. The fossils present are dominantly mollusks with abundant Foraminifera, chiefly, Orbitolina and milliolids. Distinctive biozones include a plant fragment facies, the Salenia bed, and the Corbula zone, which marks the top of the lower Glen Rose. The sediments were deposited on a shallow-marine carbonate shelf with water depths probably no greater than 6 meters. The strata were deposited in a protected environment in which both water depth and salinity fluctuated.
