Fracture Analysis of Austin Chalk Exposures in and Around the Olmos Creek Basin, San Antonio, Texas

Merrick A. Mainster, Walter W. Coppinger

Abstract

Strike orientations of vertical to subvertical fractures measured from ten exposures of Austin Chalk in the vicinity of the Olmos Creek basin within the Balcones Fault Zone define three principal joint sets. Two of these sets have northeast trends which can be correlated directly with mapped regional-scale faults within the Balcones system. The third set, confined to exposures associated with the Olmos Creek basin, trends northwest and indicates strong structural influence over the orientation and evolution of the Olmos Creek drainage, which flows in a direction nearly normal to the regional trend of the Balcones system.
