The Geology of the North West Europe Marine Area*

Peter D. Gaffney

Abstract

Studies of the main structural features and paleogeography of the North West European marine areas provide important new information on the magnitude of the oil and gas potential of the currently known prospective sedimentary basins. Insight is also provided by these studies into the prospects of the unexplored areas to the north and west which are outside the current main prospective areas.

The age of the prospective sedimentary rocks ranges from the Permian through the Tertiary and the total thickness of the sedimentary column with potential reservoir rocks exceeds 35,000 feet, with estimated recoverable reserves of oil standing in excess of 40 billion barrels. Total reserve estimates are expected to be revised upward as drilling activity continues.
